Drugs - What Are They?

A Drug is any substance that can be ingested, inhaled or injected into the body and changes the way the mind or body works. Many drugs had their start as plants that used to grow wild; cannabis, aspirin, cocaine and alcohol are just a few that contain plant materialSpiral of using Alcohol and Drugs. Other drugs such as acid or MDMA (ecstasy) or crystal meth are manufactured in laboratories and are completely synthetic.

The effect of any drug depends on the drug, the expectations of the user, and the setting the drug is used in. Drugs generally fall into categories based on how the body and mind is effected when taken.

Some drugs are Stimulants, increasing feelings of energy, well-being and excitement. The negative effects include paranoid thoughts, fainting, violent behavior, seizures and vomiting. Cocaine is a stimulant as is crack cocaine. Caffeine is also a mild stimulant.

Depressants are drugs that generally do the opposite of stimulants. These drugs depress the centres in the brain that controls our behavior as well as other functions in the body like blood pressure and breathing. Because it depresses all functions these drugs can make a person feel less nervous and more relaxed.

Drugs in the category of Hallucinogens dramatically alter emotions and thought. Hallucinations are common, seeing or hearing things that are not actually there. Many hallucinogens are produced in laboratories: PCP, LSD, MDA. Because of the "man-made' nature of many of the drugs in this class, users never really know what drug or how much of a particular drug they are taking or whether it has been contaminated.

Cannabis has been given a separate category. It doesn't fit in any usual drug group. Some of the effects are like depressants and others more like hallucinogens. It can be a stimulant as well. The feelings of calm and relaxation after use is the most common reason people use cannabis. Some effects can also include panic, anxiety and hallucinations. Probably one of the most negative effects from heavy cannabis use is the memory loss and difficulties concentrating.
